Bird Strike Forces Emergency Landing of Turkish Airlines Flight TK713 After Takeoff from Dhaka

Turkish Airlines flight TK713 was forced to make an emergency landing at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) on the morning of May 20, after a bird strike impacted one of the aircraft's engines shortly after takeoff.

The flight, operated by an Airbus A330-303 with registration TC-JOG, departed from runway 14 at approximately 7:00 AM local time, bound for Istanbul. Moments into the climb, the aircraft suffered a bird strike on engine 2 (right engine), resulting in visible sparks and smoke. In response, the pilots entered a holding pattern to assess the situation and prepare for a safe return.

After remaining airborne for 53 minutes, the aircraft landed safely back at DAC at 8:01 AM, executing a controlled and professional emergency landing. All 290 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.

In an official statement, Turkish Airlines confirmed the emergency:

“Flight TK713 on 20 May was grounded due to an AOG (Aircraft on Ground) situation following an emergency landing at Dhaka Airport. The aircraft had to return shortly after a successful takeoff due to an unexpected bird strike on engine 2. We are pleased to confirm that all passengers, crew, and the aircraft are safe. The aircraft is undergoing necessary repairs, and all passengers have been accommodated in nearby hotels.”

Ragib Samad, executive director at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, praised the crew’s swift and skilled response. “Shortly after takeoff, smoke began to emit from the right engine following the bird strike. The pilot made a precautionary but highly skilled emergency landing. All passengers are safe and unharmed.”

The Airbus A330-303 is currently grounded for inspection and maintenance. Bird strikes remain a persistent hazard in aviation, especially near urban airport environments, highlighting the importance of rapid response protocols and the expertise of flight crews.

This incident reinforces the critical safety systems and training in place within modern commercial aviation, ensuring that even unexpected challenges like wildlife encounters can be managed without harm.
